Everything You Need to Know about John Brown in Jefferson County

Jefferson County WV: John Brown History – Are you a history buff? Then you’re in luck! Jefferson County is known for being a hub for all things history in the United States. In particular, Jefferson County is the location of much of the history surrounding John Brown.

Who was John Brown? And what did he do?

John Brown was a white American abolitionist who led a raid on the Harpers Ferry armory. His hope was to arm slaves so they could escape and become freed men. In 1859, he and a group of men attacked the armory and engaged in a battle that unfortunately did not have a successful ending. Locals had been tipped off about his plans and cornered he and his men (many of whom were slaves) in the armory.

What happened after the raid?

After the Marines and General Lee surrounded the armory, Brown refused to surrender and the armory doors were battered in. Brown and some of his men were captured and put in jail until a trial declared them guilty. They were sentenced to hang in December of 1859.

What still remains?

You can visit the armory in Harpers Ferry to see where the raid took place. In Charles Town, you’ll find the location of John Brown’s hanging, which is situated on the corner of Samuel and Hunter streets.

Visit the area and explore the unique history to has to offer! Interested in buying a home in Jefferson County? Please contact the Linda Kilroy Team at ERA Liberty Realty by calling 304-725-1145 or filling out the form below.

The Eastern Panhandle has seen an increase in rainfall this spring, and we’re ready to see it leave. But until summer comes, here are a few ways you can happily embrace this rainy spring season!

Have an Indoor Picnic

Then head home and spread a blanket in your living room for a cozy indoor spring feast.

For now, enjoy the familiarity of a movie and popcorn–the theater is always playing the newest releases.

Browse Antique Shops

Jump from puddle to puddle while you browse The Wooden Shoe Antiques, Needful Things and Junkwork Antiques in downtown Charles Town, or stop in to Patriot Antiques Center and Crim-De La-Crim in Martinsburg.

Visit the Library

What better place to spend a rainy day than at the library? Curl up with a good book in a comfy chair and listen to the rain outside as you get lost in a story. Or, pick up DVD’s, audiobooks, or CD’s to pass the time at home. You’ll find all of this and more at your local libraries, such as gems like Charles Town Library and Martinsburg Public Library.

Take a Paint Class

Enjoy wine and a fun paint night with your friends or significant other at Urban Easel in Shepherdstown. You’ll feel relaxed and artistic as you create a beautiful painting to take home. Besides, who cares if it’s raining when you have wine?
