5 Tips to Simplify Your Life

The first week of August is National Simplify Your Life Week! I’m sure we all would love to simplify our lives in some way. It is easy to feel overwhelmed with busy schedules, and sometimes it starts to feel like things are spinning out of control. Yikes!

While we can’t add any more hours to the day or magically make your home clean and your schedule less busy, we do have some suggestions to help you simplify your life a little at home. Here are 5 tips to simplify your life.

1. Condense your closet

5 Tips to Simplify Your LifeI think it may be safe to say that we likely all have extra clothing in our closets and drawers that are simply taking up space that we no longer need to hold onto. Go through your clothing and take out anything that you have not worn in the past year. If you didn’t wear it last year, there is a good possibility that you will not wear it this year. Keep the essentials and toss the items that are collecting dust. If you know this will be a hard task for you, enlist the help of a close friend or family member who will be honest with you. When that little voice in your head says, “You will totally wear that next summer!” your friend can say in a louder voice, “You’ll never wear that! Toss it!” There are many local places that take clothing donations like the Jefferson County Community Ministries, and it is better to give the clothing to someone who needs it rather than have it sit in your closet. This will create less clutter while you get ready in the morning. Photo credit: Lindsay Szechenyi

2. Stop losing things!

5 Tips to Simplify Your LifeAre you always losing something? For some people it may be their keys, for other it may be their cell phone, or maybe it’s something else. No matter how many times you do it, you never seem to remember where you put certain items. Suggestion: pick a designated spot that you will always keep that item. For example, keys are so easy to lose track of. It can be so frustrating to be running late for work and realize you cannot find your keys. Even if you keep them in a purse, they can get lost among all the other stuff inside. To relieve this problem, have a hook by the front door that you can hang your keys on. As soon as you get home, hang your keys on the hook. They will always be where you left them, and they will be easy to grab as you run out the door. Another tip for the ladies is to put keys on a carabiner and clip them onto the strap of your purse when you get home. This will save you several minutes of frustration as you won’t have to rummage through your bag to find them when you go to leave the house. Photo credit: Openclipart.org

3. Take out the trash

5 Tips to Simplify Your LifeGo through cabinets and check for expired food and medicine. You will likely find several items that have not been used and should no longer be consumed. By going through the cabinets, you can get rid of items and in turn create more space. Make sure that you don’t simply go buy more of the same stuff to fill the space though. Take note of what was wasted and make sure not to purchase large amounts of that item when you go to the store. You don’t want to have to throw the same stuff away next year. Even if it seems like a better deal to buy the item in bulk, perhaps you don’t really need as much as you think you do. Photo credit: Openclipart.org

4. Have a yard sale

5 Tips to Simplify Your LifeDo you have a lot of items simply taking up space in your home that you no longer need? Why are you holding onto them? You can turn these items into profit by having a yard sale! Yard sales are great because they make you go through your home and decide what you really don’t need anymore. While it can be a big undertaking, it will be worth it in the end. There are even local Facebook pages that are used as online yard sales where you can post pictures of items you’d like to sell. After you do have a yard sale though, don’t hold onto the items that didn’t sell. If you were willing to get rid of them in the first place, then it’s time to do so. Donate them to a local non-profit organization that can use them or find people who may need those items.

5. Take it one step at a time

5 Tips to Simplify Your LifeOrganizing, getting rid of clutter, and simplifying your home life can be a big undertaking. Our last tip is to try not to overwhelm yourself; that defeats the purpose of National Simplify Your Life Week! Pick a single project or room at a time that you would like to organize. It is easy to try to accomplish a lot at once when you are motivated, but before long that motivation withers and you can be left with a huge mess that you no longer feel like cleaning up. By beginning with one space, it will be much easier to start and finish that project. Photo credit: Pixabay

We hope our 5 tips to simplify your life will help you get a little more organized and a little less stressed. Living simply can be quite a feat to accomplish. Happy National Simplify Your Life Week! We wish you the best of luck.
