Step back in time to experience life during the Civil War. The town of Shepherdstown will be transformed this weekend to a time when there was unrest amidst the North and the South. The George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, the Shepherd University Foundation, and the History Department of Shepherd University are sponsoring a one-of-a-kind event: a Shepherdstown Civil War Christmas! The university and town will be coming together to offer a unique, scholarly example of Christmastime during the Civil War. There will be lectures, musical performances, and activities for children and adults to enjoy.

Soldiers from the North and South will set up camps in town, and visitors are encouraged to stop by to chat and find out more about how soldiers lived during the war. The North camp will be set up in front of McMurran Hall, and the South camp will be set up at Trinity’s Chapel. The demonstration will take place Friday evening, December 5th, through Sunday morning, December 7th.

Have you ever wondered what it was like for women to live during this time? You can find out by speaking with some students throughout the town who will be taking on the role of nineteenth century housewives, nurses, and businesswomen of the Civil War era.

If you are looking for some authentic nineteenth century food, some of the restaurants in Shepherdstown will be serving up special items over the weekend for you to enjoy. Just look for a sign with the George Tyler Moore Center logo in the restaurant’s window to see if they are participating during the Shepherdstown Civil War Christmas event.
