Biking In and Around Shepherdstown

Spring is the perfect season for bike riding. Warmer temperatures and budding trees provide the perfect backdrop for hours of outdoor fun! Whether you’re a road bike enthusiast or fat-tire trailblazer, Shepherdstown and the surrounding area offer a variety of fun trails for the leisure rider, the weekend warrior, and the battle-hardened serious rider.

c&0canal If fat-tire mountain bikes are your preferred mode of transportation, there are many off-road paths and courses in the area that vary from leisurely rides to extremely difficult treks. Just take a quick hop across the Potomac over to the C & O National Park, and you will find the C & O towpath, which runs 184 miles from Cumberland, MD all the way down to Georgetown in Washington DC. The path is relatively flat and well maintained with some breathtaking views; riders often especially enjoy the beautiful Harpers Ferry National Park section of the tow path.

mountain biking For the more adventurous, thrill-seeking bunch who believe that mountain biking should actually involve mountains, there is the Boonsboro Greenbriar State Park which offers nine different trails through rugged mountainous terrain. The Red Trail (a 4.5 mile loop) will test the most skilled riders! There are a variety of state parks in the area – particularly in Maryland – with mountain biking trails. Just make sure to call the park you’re planning to visit before heading out, since not all parks and trails allow mountain biking.

ShepherdstownFor the road bike enthusiast, the back roads around Shepherdstown offer scenic courses with very little car and truck traffic. Plan your route carefully. Some roads (such as the more congested routes of Routes 45, 480, 230 and Flowing Spring Road) are heavily traveled and have very narrow shoulders.

Antietam National ParkIf you don’t want to battle cars and trucks, Antietam National Park is a quick five minute ride across the Potomac into Maryland. The wide roads and speed-controlled traffic offer a less stressful biking experience. However, be forewarned: there are some difficult hills to navigate.

W & OD TrailAnother option for those looking to bike without the stressful presence of vehicle traffic is the W & OD trail which runs from Purcellville, VA in Loudoun County forty-five miles to Arlington County right outside Washington DC. The trail offers an interesting transition from rural countryside of Loudoun County to the suburbs of Fairfax County, all the way to the cityscape backdrop of Arlington County.

Peddle & PaddleShepherdstown Pedal & Paddle is a full service bike shop located in the historic district of Shepherdstown. They offer new bike sales, service and maintenance packages, repairs, and bike fitting. If you don’t own a bike and want to experience Shepherdstown by bike, they offer a variety of rentals.

Looking to refuel after a grueling day on the road or up and down a mountain? Look no further than Mellow Moods located on German Street in historic Shepherdstown. They offer a mix of fresh and healthy drink and food choices, as well as catering possibilities for your biking excursion. The Blue Moon Cafe is another great local refueling stop located on Princess Street. An outdoor patio with tons of salad and delicious sandwich choices – as well as a variety of tasty local libations – makes this a perfect stop to breathe and relax.

If a weekend trip is in the cards, there are a number of places to stay in Shepherdstown including The Barvarian Inn, The Clarion Hotel, and The Thomas Shepherd Inn.
