this race is for the birds In early spring, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown along with the Potomac Valley Audubon Society hosts “This Race is for the Birds”. There’s a 4+ mile trail race, a 7+ mile trail race, a 2 mile ‘Eagle nest’ jog/walk, and a 1 mile ‘fun run’ for children under 10.

The courses run along trails through forests and fields along the Potomac River that are not normally open to the public. Beautiful spring wildflowers line the course. Plus, participants get to see an active bald eagle’s nest!

harpers ferry half marathon In May, the Harpers Ferry Half Marathon, 4 mile trail run, and Kid’s Run takes place in historic Harpers Ferry. The challenging half marathon course winds through Harpers Ferry National Historic Park and along trails and roads with expansive views of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. The race is presented by Two Rivers Treads, River Riders, and Two Rivers Heritage. The Kid’s Run is free for children under 10 years old.

Last year’s event benefitted two local non-profit organizations: Eastern Panhandle Indigo Children (EPIC) which helps children with autism; and the Outdoor Education Center of For Love of Children (OEC of FLOC) which helps healthy character development for youths and adults in an outdoor classroom.
